Choosing the right paint colors for your home can be tricky, but it’s important to get it right because it sets the mood for the entire space. Gloss, oil-based, and water-based paints are all options that you have to choose from once you’ve decided on a color. And if you’ve already put down a layer of water-based primer, don’t fret – you can use oil paint on top of it! Just make sure that the primer is totally dry before adding a coat of oil paint.
First, we need to know what is oil-based & water-based paint and how we can use it.
What is water based primer?
Water-based primer is a type of primer that is designed to be used with water-based paint. It is also known as latex primer or acrylic primer. Water-based primer is a good choice for priming surfaces that are in good condition and do not need a lot of prep work.
Water-based primer is designed to create a smooth surface for paint or wallpaper. It is applied with a brush or roller and dries quickly. Water-based primer can be used on most surfaces, including wood, drywall, and metal.

What is oil based paint?
Oil based paint is a type of paint that uses oil as a binder. This type of paint is typically used for painting surfaces that require a durable, long lasting finish such as trim, doors, and cabinets. Oil based paint is also easy to clean up with soap and water.
It is a type of paint that uses oil as a base, instead of water. Oil based paint is more durable and longer lasting than water based paint, making it a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor painting projects. However, oil based paint can be more difficult to work with and clean up, so it is important to read the instructions carefully before beginning any project.
Trying to decide if oil-based paint is the right choice for your next painting project? Here are some things to consider before making your decision. Oil-based paints offer superior durability and longevity but can be difficult to clean up and require special ventilation while in use.

How to Paint Oil Based Paint Over Water Based Primer
You can use oil-based paint over a water-based primer, but you need to be sure to follow a few simple steps to ensure that the paint adheres properly. First, make sure that the primer is completely dry before you begin painting. Next, apply a thin layer of paint to the primer, and allow it to dry completely. Once the paint is dry, you can apply a second layer if necessary. Here we’ll discuss the details steps below.
- Before you start priming, it is important to make sure your surface has been prepared properly. This includes patching and caulking any gaps or uneven surfaces, sanding down any rough spots, and scraping away any layers of old paint. You will want to make sure the surface is clean and free of dust.
- Apply a thin coat of water-based primer. Use a brush or roller to apply a thin layer of the primer, covering the entire primed area. Let it sit for about 30 minutes.
The second step in preparing for priming is to ensure there is adequate ventilation in the room where you plan to apply your primer. If you live in an apartment building, ask your landlord to open up the windows. If you work in an office, ask your boss to open up some windows. You don’t want to breathe in toxic fumes while you’re trying to prep for priming.
Also, consider opening up vents in other rooms. For example, if you are working on a wall that faces another room, open up the window in that room. This way, the fumes won’t travel into your painting space.
If you do decide to use an aerosol sprayer, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Also, keep in mind how long you’ve been spraying. Some paints contain VOCs that evaporate quickly; others take longer to dry.
- Apply another thin coat. Repeat step 2, applying a second coat of primer over the first one. Let it sit for another 30 minutes.
- Apply the final coat. Once the primer is completely dried, apply a third coat of primer. This time, let it sit overnight.
- Wait 24 hours before starting to prime. After waiting for 24 hours, start preparing the surfaces for painting. You’ll want to sand the areas where you plan to paint, especially if you’ve used a dark color like black. Sanding removes any loose dirt and dust particles that might interfere with the paint job.
- Prime the surface. Apply the fourth coat of primer. Let it dry for at least 12 hours
Oil-based paints are still the most common type used in the United States. They’re great for exterior projects like wood siding and decks because they dry fast and resist weathering well. But oil-based paints aren’t ideal for indoor applications such as walls and ceilings because they require mixing with thinners called diluents.
Latex paints don’t require diluting, so they can be applied directly from the can. This makes them easier to work with since there’s no mixing required. However, latex paints generally take longer to dry than oil-based paints, which means they’re less durable.
